About the Event
The AJM is honored to have received a rescued Czech Torah that survived the Holocaust, was recovered after WWII, and is on loan to the Augusta Jewish Museum.
The Torah Scrolls contain the Pentateuch or five books of Moses. They are at the heart of every Jewish place of worship and a sacred cherished possession. When the Germans invaded Moravia and Bohemia in 1939, the region had many old and thriving, Jewish communities. Most of the Jewish communities did not survive the Holocaust, but their Torah Scrolls have been rescued and preserved. Some of these surviving Scrolls have been restored and are again used in services today. The Torah scroll on view is from Lipnick.
Now, in the Czech Republic, there are no Jews or synagogue left in the town, only a memorial plaque. The surviving Torah keeps alive the memory of the Jewish community of Lipnick and bears witness to its hopes and tragedy.
